Solon Corp. to develop solar plant near Gila Bend

Tucson-based Solon Corp. will develop, design and construct an 18-megawatt solar power plant near Gila Bend under a contract with Arizona Public Service Co., the companies said Thursday.
The 145-acre, sun-tracking photovoltaic system is due to start construction in the first quarter of 2011 and be completed in 2011. APS will own and operate the plant, which will eventually generate enough energy to power more than 4,500 homes.
The project’s cost was not disclosed. It is part of a plan that calls for APS to invest up to $500 million in photovoltaic power plants across Arizona.
