Global Datacenter Trust is building its first data center, a 160,000-square-foot retrofit of an existing Phoenix building.

The company announced ground breaking for the facility, dubbed Phoenix NAP, on Thursday. The building, near 34th Street and University Drive, will feature co-located data services as well as office space for tech companies.

“By creating co-location space and office locations for companies around the globe, we’re helping the local economy and driving continued growth of its healthy high tech sector,” said Jordan Jacobs, director of operations for Phoenix NAP. “Phoenix is an ideal location for a data center, not only because it’s in a disaster-free area, but also because the city and work force are highly supportive of the high-tech industry.”

The first phase of the center is expected to be complete by October, with the data space coming online in the first quarter of 2010, company officials said.

This is Global Datacenter Trust’s first center. The Phoenix NAP will be slightly larger than some other data centers in area, but falls in the 100,000- to 300,000-square-foot range of most centers.

The center will feature more than 20 megawatts of redundant power. The company chose the Phoenix site because of its proximity in an area that has relatively few natural hazards and is close to an international airport.

Company officials would not release the cost of the center or speculate on job creation.
