The U.S. Marine Corps was looking for a few good improvements to its combat operations centers, the focal point of decision making for deployed Marine commanders and their staffs, and has awarded a $21 million contract to General Dynamics C4 Systems for electronic upgrades.
According to an announcement Monday from Scottsdale-based General Dynamics C4 Systems, the company will add Internet-like capabilities to the combat operations centers, also known as COCs, to upgrade the electronics systems to boost the Marines’ situational awareness and information-sharing abilities, as well as improving network connectivity across the tactical battlespace.
The new system, identified as COC Model G, will allow the sharing of mission rehearsal and execution information among other Marine COCs and joint forces partners. The system will provide such features as electronic “chat,” e-mail and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) commmunications.
General Dynamics also will move existing hardware-based command and control tactical data systems to a software-based command and control system that will be more readily adaptable to integration of new technologies.
The COC Model G also is part of the Marines’ effort to become compliant with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Net-Enabled Command Capability, which enables Internet-like access to joint tactical networks.
General Dynamics C4 Division is an integrator of secure communication and information technology systems and technology.
Falls Church, Va.-based General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), employs about 92,000 people worldwide and specializes in business aviation; land and expeditionary combat systems, armaments and munitions; shipbuilding and and marine systems; and information systems and technologies.
