Fennemore Craig PC cut 17 positions in two sets of layoffs.
The Phoenix-based law firm laid off about 10 staffers this month, said managing director Tim Berg. He also confirmed Fennemore dropped seven attorneys in February.
Fennemore joins a number of national and local law firms that have seen business volume decline with the slow economy forcing cost cuts and layoffs.
“This was a very difficult decision to make. We hate to do this,” Berg said of the cuts.
Fennemore has offices in Phoenix, Denver, Nogales, Tucson and Las Vegas and about 200 attorneys. Berg said most of the cuts occurred in Phoenix, where the firm has the bulk of its operations and staff.
Berg also said Fennemore still is planning to bring on five new associates out of law school in September. He said some national firms have delayed those new hires.
Phoenix-based Snell & Wilmer LLP confirmed last week that it laid off between 30 and 40 support staffers also due to the economy. Snell did not cut any attorneys in its layoffs.
